Sub: Ban Asbestos Usage in Auto Parts

You are doing groundbreaking work by highlighting various issues of human interest that other leaders could not even think about. I would like to draw your kind attention to the rampant usage of asbestos products in garages and auto workshops. This usage puts millions of auto repair mechanics and commuters at risk of contracting harmful diseases caused due exposure to asbestos.

Respected sir, despite asbestos mining ban in India, many auto companies continue to import and use asbestos for auto parts such as brakes, clutches and heat seals. When these parts break, the asbestos is released in air and put lives of mechanics at risk. While one understands usage of asbestos for low cost sheds and roof sheets, their usage in after sales market of auto industry should not be encouraged and be checked and banned.

Most of the two, three and four wheel auto companies openly declare they don’t use asbestos products. But the reality is that after sales market is flooded with such products. While asbestos may be known for its fire resistant qualities, research has shown it also causes harmful diseases including Mesothelioma, an extremely deadly form of cancer. You are known to take up humanitarian causes sir and be bold in expressing them. There is a lot of belief in India due to your boldness and dynamism. When companies across the world have banned usage of asbestos, why should this practice continue in India! I humbly request you to take up this issue and educate people about harmful effects of asbestos usage in auto parts. I will also mark this letter to concerned ministries and major auto companies to seek their position and stand on this issue. I will also update you about the responses I receive from them.

With great humility, I to suggest Hon’ble PM to ban usage of asbestos in auto products in India and promote our country as the destination in the world that manufactures absolutely asbestos free safe auto parts. Due to strict emission norms, asbestos products are banned across all major developed markets. India too can make this start under your strong leadership and ask auto industry to completely ban usage of asbestos products. Indian can be a global hub and world leader that makes asbestos free auto parts for auto majors across the globe.

This initiative by you sir will safeguard millions of lives of commuters and mechanics. This will also be a great addition to your environment friendly Make in India initiative. This will be among the many popular initiatives undertaken by the most popular leader of India.
